A baby’s foot is typically flexible and padded with fat. Most children start to walk between the ages of 8 and 18 months. At this time, they are usually still flat-footed, or their feet turn inward because their bones, muscles, and ligaments have not fully developed. Toddlers should be encouraged to walk barefoot as much as possible as this encourages balance, posture, muscle strength, and coordination. They get important sensory information from the soles of their feet touching the ground. When the child walks confidently, firm-soled shoes can be worn. Footwear can help protect their feet from injury in heat and cold. Have your child’s feet professionally measured to ensure the shoes that are worn are the correct size. Their feet grow quickly so this may need to be done every few months. Shoes that do not fit properly can hamper your child’s walking and cause foot problems like ingrown toenails. Shoes should have plenty of room for their toes, have a flexible, flat sole, and fasteners that do not allow too much movement or slipping of the foot in the shoe. How to Care for Your Child's Feet

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis

People who have jobs that require them to be on their feet are also likely to develop plantar fasciitis. This includes factory workers, teachers, and others who spend a large portion of their day walking around on hard surfaces. Another risk factor is obesity because excess weight can result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

People with plantar fasciitis often experience a stabbing pain in the heel area. This pain is usually at its worst in the morning, but can also be triggered by periods of standing or sitting. Plantar fasciitis may make it hard to run and walk. It may also make the foot feel stiff and sensitive, which consequently makes walking barefoot difficult.

Treatment for plantar fasciitis depends on the severity of the specific case of the condition. Ice massage applications may be used to reduce pain and inflammation. Physical therapy is often used to treat plantar fasciitis, and this may include stretching exercises. Another treatment option is anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen.

The Difference Between Corns and Calluses

Calluses and corns on the feet are both hardened areas of skin that form as the result of repeated pressure, friction, or rubbing. If you do a lot of walking or running, and especially while wearing shoes that are new or do not fit properly, at some point you are likely to develop a corn or callus. A corn is a hardened area that generally pushes deeper into the skin and can be painful. Three types are hard corns, soft corns, and seed corns. A hard corn is usually yellow and commonly forms on the top or side of a toe. It may contain a hardened kernel in the center, which can become painful when it is under pressure from a shoe. Soft corns are whitish in color and form between the toes. They stay soft because of the moisture that builds up in the feet. Seed corns are tiny bumps that form in clusters on the bottom of the foot, frequently on the ball of the foot or bottom of the heel. A callus is generally spread over a larger area and is not normally painful. They may form on the bottom of the foot, just behind the toes, where excessive walking puts pressure on the bones. Bone deformities may play a part in developing a callus. Painful or irritating corns and calluses can be pared away by a podiatrist, who can safely perform this procedure.
