Babies and Flat Feet
Monday, 08 July 2019 00:00Research has indicated that most babies are born with flat feet, which will most likely change as they become older. This condition may persist in a limited amount of children, and there may be specific reasons for this. The Achilles tendon may be shortened, and this can result in the muscles and ligaments becoming tightened in the heel area. This can lead to reduced motion in the foot and may cause the arch of the foot to become flat. Children who have flat feet after walking begins may experience pain and discomfort in the place of the foot where the arch would normally be, and it may be difficult to move the foot up and down or side to side. If flat feet are left untreated, it can lead to serious foot conditions that may include arthritis. If you notice your child has flat feet while walking, it is suggested to consult with a podiatrist who can help you to find the correct treatment techniques.
The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact Dr. Randy Garr of Bigfoot Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy
- Make sure their shoes fit properly
- Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
- Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
- Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
- Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
- Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
- Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
- Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.
